Professional Pool Remodeling in North Texas
Give Your Pool a New Finish, New Stone and a New Look With Southern Pool + Outdoors
Your pool should be a place you look forward to using, not something that feels dated or worn out. Southern Pool + Outdoors provides pool remodeling in North Texas for homeowners who want an aging pool to look and feel new again.
We handle everything from a simple replaster to a full remodel: new interior finishes, waterline tile, coping, decking, water features, spa additions and pool reshaping. We have our own crews for prep, plumbing, installation and finish application, so the team that tears out your old surface is the same team that puts the new one in.
Most pools we see around North Texas don’t need to be torn out. The shell is usually fine. What wears out is everything on top of it, and that is exactly what a remodel replaces.
We remodel pools in North Texas and nearby communities including Dallas, Plano, McKinney, Frisco, Fairview, Lucas and Wylie.

Why Pools in North Texas Need Remodeling Sooner
North Texas is hard on pool surfaces. Long summers of direct sun fade and roughen plaster. Our hard water leaves white calcium scale along the tile line, and it gets harder to remove every year it sits there.
The clay soil around North Texas causes problems too. It swells when it’s wet and shrinks when it dries out, and that movement is what cracks decks and pops coping loose.
None of that usually means the pool itself has failed. It means the finishes have reached the end of their life, and replacing them is the job a remodel is built for.
Water chemistry matters as well. Low calcium, pH or alkalinity makes the water aggressive. Then it starts dissolving calcium out of the plaster itself (Pentair explains the chemistry). That’s what etching is, and it’s why a neglected pool can need resurfacing years early.
Pool Remodeling Services We Offer
Every remodel is different. Some homeowners only need a new finish. Others want new tile, stone and decking along with it, or a bigger change like a spa or a new shape. Here is what we handle.
Pool Resurfacing
The interior finish has the biggest effect on how your pool looks and feels. We resurface with smooth and textured finishes made from quartz, pebble, glass bead and polished aggregate, from a basic replaster up to premium finish lines.
Pool resurfacing replaces the worn layer on top of the shell. Underneath, the structure is gunite, a mix of aggregate, cement and sand, and that rarely needs replacing. Pool replastering with standard white plaster is the budget option. A quartz pool finish or pebble pool finish costs more up front, but it gives you more color choices and texture.
Water Color
The finish color decides the water color. The same pool can look light gray, blue gray or deep dark blue depending on what you pick, so you see samples before anything goes on the wall.

Pool Coping
Coping is the trim between the water’s edge and the deck. We install everything from cantilevered coping to hand-cut natural stone, and changing it can update an older pool more than people expect.

Pool coping replacement often goes hand in hand with new tile. Both sit along the same edge, and North Texas clay pushes on both.
Pool Tile Replacement
We replace waterline, trim and spillway tile in solid colors, iridescent finishes, porcelain and glass. New tile also gets rid of calcium buildup that cleaning can no longer remove.

If your tile is sound and only scaled, try our tile cleaning first. Replacement makes sense once tiles are cracked, loose or etched.
Pool Decking
The deck sets the style of the whole swimming area. We install travertine, Belgard pavers, decorative overlays and spray deck, chosen to look good and stay non-slip around the water.

A resurfacing job is the right time to look at the deck, too. Pool deck resurfacing with an overlay or spray deck covers worn concrete for less than a full replacement. Pool deck repair fixes cracks from soil movement before they spread.
Water Features
A remodel is the easiest time to add what the original builder left out: cascading waterfalls, sheer descents, scuppers, deck jets, fountains, fire features, LED lighting, slides or a swim-up bar. If you have something else in mind, even something that has never been done before, we can design it.

Pool water features need plumbing and pump capacity. So we plan them while the pool is drained and the lines are exposed. That’s the easiest point to add a pool waterfall or deck jets without cutting into a finished deck later. For lighting, see our pool light installation page.
Spa Additions and Infinity Edges
We can add a spa to an existing pool or turn a pool wall into an infinity wall.
Pool Reshaping
If the shape or layout of your pool no longer fits your yard, we can reshape it as part of the remodel.
What Happens During a Pool Renovation
A pool renovation goes in a set order, and two steps decide how long the new finish lasts: draining the pool safely and starting the new surface up correctly.
Draining Safely in North Texas Soil
Every resurfacing job starts with an empty pool, and an empty pool is at its most vulnerable. When groundwater rises after heavy rain, it pushes up on the shell. Many in-ground pools have a hydrostatic relief valve in the floor for this. It opens and lets that water in before the pressure lifts or cracks the shell. Checking that valve is part of draining a pool the right way. So timing the drain around heavy rain matters too.
Why New Plaster Needs a Careful Start-Up
A new finish isn’t done when the water goes back in. Plaster keeps curing, with most of that happening in the first 28 days. During the first week, the whole surface needs brushing at least twice a day to remove plaster dust. The heater should stay off until the dust is gone. Meanwhile, pH, alkalinity and calcium get tested daily and kept in line, because aggressive water attacks fresh plaster fastest. Our new plaster start-up service covers those steps with multiple visits, water balancing, brushing, filter cleaning and a care guide.
What Affects Pool Remodeling Cost
Pool remodeling cost comes down to a few things:
- The size of the pool and its surface area
- The finish you choose, from plaster to quartz to pebble
- How much tile and coping gets replaced
- Deck work, from repairs to full resurfacing
- New water features, a spa or reshaping
- Equipment upgrades done during the job
- Plumbing problems found once the pool is drained
The same factors drive pool resurfacing cost and pool renovation cost. We’ll give you an estimate based on your pool and the materials you pick.
Choosing Finishes That Work Together
The most common remodeling mistake is choosing each material on its own. A tile that looks great as a sample can clash with the finish once the pool is full, and the water color changes how everything around it looks.
When you plan your remodel with Southern Pool + Outdoors, we look at:
- How the finish color will change your water color
- Tile that works with both the finish and the coping stone
- Coping and decking that suit your home and backyard
- Where water features and lighting will actually be seen
- Your budget, so the money goes where it makes the biggest difference
You see finish, tile and stone samples before construction starts, so there are no surprises when the water goes back in.
Our Pool Remodeling Process in North Texas
Our own crews handle prep, plumbing, installation and finish application, so there is no handoff between subcontractors in the middle of your project.
Step 1: Consultation
We come out to your home, look at the pool and equipment, and talk through what you want to change and what you want to spend.
Step 2: Pool Analysis and Design
We check the condition of the shell, tile, coping and plumbing, go over feature options, and show you finish, tile and stone samples before any work is scheduled.
Step 3: Prep and Plumbing
Our crew drains the pool, removes the old surface and materials, and takes care of plumbing work while everything is exposed.
Step 4: Installation and Finish
Tile, coping, decking and features go in first, and the new interior finish is applied last.
Step 5: Start-Up
We refill the pool, balance the water for the new finish and walk you through caring for it. Because we also service pools every week, your pool can go straight onto a maintenance plan.

Signs It's Time to Remodel Your Pool
Not every aging pool needs to be rebuilt. In many cases the structure is still good, and only the materials around it have reached the point where replacing them makes sense. Homeowners usually call us when they notice:
- A rough or stained surface that won’t come clean
- Faded, cracked or loose tile
- Damaged or loose coping
- Cracked or worn decking
- Old lighting or equipment that costs too much to run
- A backyard design that no longer fits the home
Sometimes nothing is wrong with the pool at all, and you simply want it to look better. That’s a good reason too. A consultation lets us see what you have and tell you which upgrades will make the biggest difference.
Stains are worth a closer look before you commit. Some lift with an acid wash, while others are in the plaster for good and call for pool resurfacing.

Pool Remodeling Questions From North Texas Homeowners
We’ve shared a series of our most common questions and answered them. If you need additional information or have other questions, never hesitate to reach out to us.
Common reasons include rough or stained pool surfaces, outdated tile, damaged coping, worn decking, older lighting or simply wanting to update the look of the backyard. We can inspect your pool and tell you which upgrades make sense.
Yes. Many remodels are just a new finish, or new tile and coping. We'll tell you what needs to be done now and what can wait.
Yes. Water color comes mostly from the interior finish. Blue Gray, Dark Blue and Light Gray finishes give very different looks, and you see samples before any work starts.
Yes, and it's usually the best way to do it. Both sit along the edge of the pool, and replacing them together keeps the materials matched.
Yes. We add waterfalls, sheer descents, scuppers, deck jets, fountains, fire features and LED lighting to existing pools, often as part of a remodel.
Usually, yes. Pool resurfacing replaces only the worn layer, so you get a new-looking pool for far less than a rebuild. The gunite shell underneath typically stays. It's worth doing once the surface is rough, etched or stained for good. A rough finish holds dirt and algae, and North Texas sun and hard water keep making it worse.
There's no fixed schedule. Resurface when the finish turns rough, etched, stained or starts to flake, or when it becomes a hazard to swimmers. Water chemistry decides a lot of it. Low calcium, pH or alkalinity makes water aggressive enough to dissolve plaster. A well-balanced pool keeps its finish years longer than a neglected one.
Yes. A remodel is a good time to replace older pumps, filters, heaters, lighting and automation, especially when other parts of the pool are already being updated.
It depends on the size of your pool and what you're changing. A new finish costs far less than a remodel with new tile, coping, decking and features. We'll give you an estimate based on your pool and the materials you choose.
It depends on the scope. A resurface is a shorter project than a remodel that also includes tile, coping and decking. You'll get a schedule along with your estimate.
For resurfacing, tile and most coping work, yes. The pool has to be empty and dry. Draining is the riskiest moment for the shell, because groundwater can push up on an empty pool after heavy rain. A good crew checks the hydrostatic relief valve and times the drain around the weather. Then it handles the refill and start-up chemistry.
